Clear It Out First, Then Clean
A seasonal reset is easier to plan in one order: sort the cupboards, then clean the cleared shelves and surfaces.

Before You Start
What you need
- All-purpose cleaner and microfibre cloths
- Glass cleaner
- Vacuum with attachments
- Mop and bucket
- Rubbish bags and donation bags
- Containers and labels for whatever you are reorganising
How to approach it
Work one room at a time so sorted belongings and cleaning supplies stay contained. Start with the room you most want to change.
Kitchen
- Clean behind and under the fridge
- Wipe cupboard fronts and handles
- Sort the pantry and check every date
- Deep clean the oven and rangehood
- Descale the kettle, clean the small appliances
- Empty, sort and wipe out the under-sink storage
- Clean the light fittings and switches
Living Areas
- Move the furniture and vacuum underneath
- Dust surfaces, shelves and objects
- Clean windows inside and out
- Wash curtains or dust the blinds
- Flip or rotate the sofa cushions
- Edit the bookshelves, side tables and media unit
- Skirting boards and door frames
Bedrooms
- Rotate the mattress, wash the protector
- Wash all the bedding, including pillows and doonas
- Clear the bedside and dressing tables
- Swap the wardrobe over: winter out, warmer things forward
- Vacuum inside the wardrobe and wipe the shelves
- Mirrors and light fittings
Bathrooms
- Descale the screen and tapware
- Clean the grout
- Sort the cabinets and get rid of what has expired
- Wash the bath mats, shower curtain and towels
- Clean the exhaust fan
- Reorganise under the sink
Laundry
- Clean the washing machine drum and filter
- Lint trap and dryer exterior
- Sort and group the cleaning products
- Wash the hampers
- Replace anything worn out
Outside
- Sweep or pressure-wash the balcony or patio
- Clean the outdoor furniture
- Clear out the garage or shed
- Wash the bins
Afterwards
Give donations, recycling and rubbish an agreed next step so the outgoing groups do not become a new hallway pile.
This is also the natural point to set up any storage you now know you need, and to put a small maintenance routine in place for the months ahead.
